Experience a culture that dates back more than 1600 years by touring an ancient ruin, exploring a contemporary Maya village, and then visiting with a Maya family in their home. Hear the sounds of the native language, gain insight into local history, learn about herbal medicines, savor an authentic snack, make new friends, and celebrate Maya culture as it unfolds right before your eyes.
This moderately active half-day tour takes an in-depth look at a highly advanced pre-Columbian culture. The only indigenous American society to create a complete written language, the Maya achieved a great level of sophistication in architecture, math, art, and astronomy. Among their many accomplishments, the ancient Maya also invented a calendar of remarkable accuracy and complexity.
Maya’s influence spread from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras, Guatemala, and Northern El Salvador to as far away as Central Mexico. Despite the decline of the Classic period and the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the Maya people and their culture never disappeared. Today, the Maya form sizable populations throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and maintain a distinctive set of traditions, customs, and beliefs.
You’ll experience the grand sweep of their history on a cultural adventure that will both educate and delight you. On this tour, you will witness the reality that faces these remarkable people as their ancient culture collides and blends with the modern world.
Begin your adventure in a small, contemporary Maya community built up around the remains of an ancient settlement and visit one of the small ruins located right in the middle of town. Follow your native guide into an authentic Mayan house where you’ll learn how totally committed the locals are to keeping their customs alive.
As you interact with a family in their home, you’ll learn about ancient medicines still in use today, and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch of traditional Mayan/Mexican Cuisine including buried earth-cooked chicken pibil, handmade tortillas, and exotic fruits and vegetables. When it’s time to bid your new-found friends adieu, you’ll re-board your transportation for the scenic drive through the countryside and along the coastline to the pier. The knowledge that your professional guide brings to the passing sights will further illuminate Mayan history and create lasting memories of an ancient culture fully committed to keeping its ancient traditions alive.
