General Info

Experience Mexico’s past and present as you explore the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Izapa, Visit the Planetarium and learn about Mayan Cosmology, watch Maya Dancers perform, and then wander Tapachula’s town square on a sightseeing adventure that will both educate and delight you. From the pier, you’ll journey approximately 45 minutes aboard an air-conditioned bus to the ancient ruins of Izapa.

From its beginnings as a small village sometime around 1500 BCE, Izapa grew into the region’s most influential cultural and commercial center with a population of possibly up to 10,000 people at the height of it’s influence sometime between 60 BCE and 100 ACE. Once foremost in the region for the production of highly valued cacao, Izapa brought together many of Mesoamerica’s ancient cultures and many believe it may be the site of origin of the sacred Mayan Calendar although much study remains to be done in order to unlock these secrets. From here, you’ll travel by bus to the culturally diverse city of Tapachula whose history and heritage have been influenced not only by the Mayans, Mestizo’s, and Spanish but by German, Chinese, Japanese and French immigrants as well.  From here, your tour guide will introduce you to some of the city’s highlights on a short walking tour around the town square.

You’ll have free time for shopping in local artisan shops for leather goods, ceramics and more. Then it is time to travel by bus to Tapachula Planetarium where you will watch a presentation inside the dome about Maya Astronomy and Cosmology and then watch Maya Dancers perform Maya dances before returning by bus to your ship’s pier.
